My approach

The experience of living life, even when that life feels ‘normal’ to you, means we each have a unique story. I love helping students find their story because I myself had a winding journey toward realizing I have a story worth telling. Through honest conversations, encouragement and writing exercises, I offer ways for high school students to reflect on their life experiences to gain a perspective on who they are. I believe the goal of writing an essay is not to convince anyone you are better than any of the other applicants. Rather, the goal is to put together a piece of writing that captures who you are so that the admissions team can decide whether you’re a good fit.

Your job in writing this essay is not necessarily to convince someone to admit you. It is to put together a piece of writing that captures who you are so that an admissions team can make an informed decision.

Ultimately, learning to craft a compelling essay is about learning to speak about yourself and reflect on your experiences to make meaning. You will need to be able to present yourself and your story in a compelling way for job and internship applications, when meeting new people, when talking to professors, applying for a lab assistant position on campus, and even to simply complete the rest of the college application, not just the essay. So why not learn this skill now?
